Use It for Traction
Colorado residents are no strangers to snow, and while it might be sunny now, we know that come October or November, snow is pretty much inevitable. When the snow does arrive, the road conditions are always a surprise, which is why it’s important to be prepared for any situation. If you’re worried about your car getting stuck in the snow, a great way to reuse your old carpeting is to keep it in your car for traction! On the off chance your vehicle does get stuck in the snow, you can lay down some of the old carpet behind your wheels to give your car more traction. You may be surprised at how well it works.
Make a Scratching Post
Cats make great pets, except when they use your furniture as their personal scratching post. Believe it or not, but scratching posts can become less effective with a lot of use, but if you have some old carpet, you can easily repurpose it for your cats! You can use an old scratching post that has seen better days, or you can buy wood from your local hardware store. Once you have the base of the post, all you have to do is glue or staple the old carpet to the base and voila! You have a brand new scratching post for your cats to destroy.
Create a Play Area
Playing on hardwood, vinyl, or laminate flooring can be uncomfortable for kids, as well as adults if you choose to play along. If you have kids or grandkids who frequently play in an area of your house where there isn’t carpeting, you may want to consider using some of your old carpet to create a play area. All you need is a large square of carpet that you can set down on the floor where they are playing. The great thing about using old carpet instead of buying a rug is that you won’t have to worry if it gets damaged!
Use It as a Durable Rag
Whether you’re cleaning your house or working on a project, there are times where a regular rag just doesn’t cut it. In these situations, it may be a good idea to have a few scraps of old carpet available. For example, if you are working on cleaning window screens that haven’t been cleaned in a year or two, a regular rag may not be able to really get the dirt and grime caught in the screen. However, carpeting is more durable and may have an easier time scrubbing away at the screen, especially when paired with warm water and soap.
Prevent Damage to Your Car Door
While the main purpose of a garage is to house your vehicle, most people will also use their garage as storage space for various items, as well as a work area for household projects. Both of these uses can make the space you use to park your car a tight squeeze, and the last thing you want is to damage your door by hitting the wall when you try to get out. Luckily, a scrap of old carpeting could be the solution to your problem! If you have some old carpet laying around, consider attaching it to the wall where you open your car door. The carpet will give the wall extra padding, so you won’t have to worry about damaging your door anytime you enter or exit the vehicle in your garage.
